Sports Suck Right Now

::Rant Alert::

Well I’m just going to say it, the sports world sucks for me right now.  Notre Dame was unbearable to watch all fall.  Now they have no coach and despite all of those rumors about big names like Stoops and Meyer, it is not going to happen.  I want Brian Kelly to get the job but he is far from a home run.  Ugh…

The Patriots are average because of the total lack of a pass-rush and strange play calls.  Seriously, how can an NFL defense get such little pressure on a QB?  It is sad to watch.  Belichick prides himself on being prepared and having his teams prepared.  How could the go into this season with such a problem on defense?  Sadly it won’t get fixed until the offseason.  I see this team going 10-6, winning the division, winning wild card weekend and then getting stomp in the divisional round.  Ugh…

Finally, the Red Sox.  They called a press conference on Friday for what they deemed “a major announcement.”  That announcement…the signing of career utility infielder, journey man Marco Scutaro.   Some people are applauding the move saying he is a great defender and can hit pretty well.  I see it as another low-money, low-reward signing that has become the signature of the Theo Epstein Era.  Theo is great at drafting and developing players, as well as making trades, he isn’t great at free agent signing.  Oh and I fully expect Jason Bay to go to Seattle and then the Sox will overpay for Holliday.  Ugh…

So the three teams that I follow the closest are all pissing me off.  Ugh…

On a positive note, at least the Celtics are getting it going.

NBA Betting Scandal

Anyone see this report by Joe Amorosino of 7News in Boston this morning?  It states that 13 referees were involved in the Tim Donaghy betting scandal with Donaghy being the king of the group.  I believe every word of it.  I have always thought that NBA games never seemed completely on the up and up.  Ever heard the saying “everyone makes a run” when referring to NBA games?  Is that because teams get hot and cold or because the refs were evening things out?  I played basketball and I know teams go hot and cold over the course of a game, but why is it that for 90% of NBA games all you have to do is watch the final 5 minutes because you know it will be close?  Granted the talent level is closer but this just does not happen at other levels of basketball.

If you haven’t had the chance, read the excerpts from Donaghy’s book on DeadSpin.  Pretty damning stuff for the NBA if you ask me.

In the words of Tommy Heinsohn “THESE GUYS ARE RIDICULOUS!”

Trouble with the Boston Celtics?

Has anyone been watching the Celtics lately?  If you have then you are probably like me and a little concerned with the way things have been going.  Even the games they have been winning have not been very impressive.  Kevin Garnett does not look right – the fact that he still seems to have a limp and there has never been anything official on what he actually hurt last year is concerning.  Rajon Rondo does not look like the same player – could it be a post-contract hangover?  Contracts are guaranteed in the NBA so I sure hope not.  Ray Allen and Rasheed Wallace have not found their stroke from the outside lately.  Thankfully Paul Pierce continues to be the dependable scorer for this team, especially towards the end of the game.

Ultimately I think this team will turn it around but the trend is concerning.  For a team that was talking about 72 wins at the start of the year, they better hope that it turns around quickly.
